One question before I start: Do we save as PNGs or JPGs? I got a little bit confused by the guidelines when you said to not compress the PNGs...
ReplyDeleteI would also like to remind everyone to CENTER their text when they're typesetting, because I noticed that some of you didn't do so and I know readers would appreciate it if you took some effort to center the text in the bubble. Also, watch out for some grammar errors in Chuang Yi's translations, they're not perfect and there was already a grammar mistake in the first test page.
PNG for black and white, JPEG for color. PNG should still be saved as Grayscale and not Indexed (through Save as Web, PNGCrush, etc.), because pngnqi is a better compressor.

And yea, I can't help you with proofreading. I'll just look for obvious graphical errors.

Well, there are some problems:
ReplyDelete1) The volume number should be padded ("v09"), because that way it can be always sorted correctly.
2) Image mode should be grayscale.
3) Shouting should be Bold-Italic.
4) Even if it means going out of the bounds of the text bubble, the text box that starts with "You mean this lake" should be vertically centered and have a slightly larger Outer Glow. Perhaps your intention was to preserve the art, but it looks worse with text all cramped up like that, right?
Please think about this from a reader's point of view. What do they want to see?
I guess it's my fault for not properly inspecting number 3 on the first test. You don't have to completely conform to Chuang Yi's styling. For example, the text bubble at the bottom is shouting and has a generous space, so it looks weird if you don't kick the font size up a notch.
ReplyDeleteOh, and come to think of it, image hosts might change your image mode, so compress any image and upload it to a file-hosting site, even if it's just one image.
I'm not sure if I did a good job on the title name properly so here it is to check.

I've made a new blog post about fixing the most common problems. They are:
ReplyDelete1) Text touches the edge: Not to pick on him, but Genosect's upper-left bubble would not pass QC. Either shift the text over to a new line or use Outer Glow.
2) Not proper case: WildWords does have case differences. For example, it's obvious that link and zdraconicespeon's "I"s aren't capitalized. Please type with normal capitalization.
Also, zdraconicespeon, I guess I didn't really explicitly state this, but don't use the accented e in Pokemon. I would love it if we had the international version of WildWords which supports the accented e, but alas, pirates aren't that rich. Consistency is better in this case.
Otherwise, they're decent. You guys will get better.
I'm checking in to make sure that the ones I've done so far are passing QC right now, before I move on to more tomorrow.

ReplyDelete@Hiroko: For this project, you don't have to do the Pokedex entries. I actually cheat by running an emulator and taking a screenshot of the Pokedex entry from the game. Look up the Pokemon on Bulbapedia, find which game the Pokedex entry is from, then get the game and take the screenshot.
Again, I assume that most people know what the Gen 2/3 Pokemon are by now, but you're free to do this if you want.

You have styling problems: not using Bold-Italic for shouting or Italic for dialogue from radio, computer speakers, etc. It would pass if you corrected those.

Good, passed. Well, I recommend you go back and change the style of the thought bubbles (the cloud-like ones) to italics.
